Scottish Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross Jamie Stone has today said that his party is “going from strength to strength in the Highlands” following a council by-election which has seen the Liberal Democrats storm to victory in Cromarty Firth.

John Edmondson has been elected as the new Liberal Democrat member of the Highland Council for the Cromarty Firth ward. The by-election also saw the Liberal Democrats defeat the SNP with the Scottish Conservatives finishing last, while Scottish Labour finished ninth.

Commenting on the result, Jamie Stone said:

“This stunning victory for the Liberal Democrats cements our place as the clear challenger to the SNP in the Highlands. I know that John will work day-in, day-out to make a difference for the people he serves.

“Time and again, Liberal Democrats are proving that we are the strong, credible challenge to the SNP in huge swathes of Scotland. The Conservatives and Labour were both scraping the very bottom of the barrel with this result- neither of them can deliver for communities up here.

“Across the Highlands, people are rediscovering their Liberal Democrat roots. They’re switching to us because they know we’ll fight for a fair deal, whether that’s on road safety, transport links or access to healthcare.

“People in the Highlands are sick of being ignored. Only the Liberal Democrats have a plan to reverse years of SNP and Conservative neglect and put communities first."
