Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has today challenged Scottish Government ministers to set out what planning it has in place for a fresh Covid-19 wave.
Figures published by Public Health Scotland today show that in the week ending 19 June 2022, there have been 15,541 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 30.5% from the previous week.
In the week ending 19 June 2022, there were on average 867 patients in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 25.1% from the previous week ending 12 June 2022 (693).
This is the third week in a row that the number of Covid cases has risen.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
"There is now no doubt that Covid cases are trending in the wrong direction. Not only that but Scotland is in a worse position than the rest of the UK.
"This gathering storm of Covid cases is significant because we know that the risk of long Covid increases with repeat infections.
"Ministers need to set out what measures it will take in order to avoid having to impose restrictions in the winter months. For example, so far the Scottish Government has set out key priority groups who can expect an autumn booster but there is no information about whether other groups will be entitled or able to pick up boosters as happens with the flu jab.
"Given the Scottish Government's failure to plan ahead for previous Covid waves, the public will want to know what planning is being done now.
"NHS workers are already overstretched. That's why Scottish Liberal Democrats have called for the Scottish Government to create a new class of NHS worker tasked with delivering vaccinations and a permanent vaccine workforce, freeing up nurses and GPs to get on with cutting waiting lists."
