Responding to official figures showing that local authorities' debt continues to grow, with an estimate that £2 billion more will be added to their debts this year, Scottish Liberal Democrat local government spokesperson Cllr Peter Barrett commented:

"Councils have been between a rock and a hard place for years, receiving less money with more strings attached and now with spiralling costs of borrowing and demands for pay rises.

"Just 26 days after making big promises at the council elections, the SNP/Green Government unveiled their plan for more savage cuts in the Spending Review. It risks doing serious damage to communities across Scotland.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats want to help protect local authorities through a power surge. It means giving them more powers over economic development, planning and transport and ending the SNP's power grabs."
