A&E target missed by biggest margin as winter crisis soars

Responding to the news that performance against the A&E waiting time target has further fallen to its lowest level since March 2018, with only 83.8% of patients treated within 4 hours compared to the 95% target, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"A&E performance has continued to plummet this December as doctors and nurses battle to solve the mounting winter crisis without the resources or staff they so urgently need.

"There can be no more excuses from the Health Secretary. Under the watch of the SNP Government, this target has not been met for years. We were promised an integrated workforce plan over a year ago now and with nearly 4,500 patients waiting longer than expected last week, staff and patients are rightfully distressed.

"To give patients and their families a brighter future, the strain on A&E departments needs to stop. Liberal Democrats' commitment to stopping Brexit will ensure Scotland retains staff from across the EU and invests the Remain bonus in our public services."
