Responding to the Scottish Government's announcement of details of the Scottish Child Payment, Scottish Liberal Democrat Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"We know early intervention is the best way to address the disadvantages that Scotland's most vulnerable children face. On that basis, these payments are a sensible way to proceed and we welcome them.

"Last week the First Minister, under pressure from Willie Rennie, evidently didn't know that two thirds of 2 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds weren't taking up their entitlement to free childcare.

"Today's initiative is application-based. The success of it will therefore be dependent on the Scottish Government doing a better job of making families more aware of the offer and reducing any unfair stigma attached."
