Commenting on new figures showing that the number of specialist Maths and English teachers has fallen by almost 1,000 since 2008, education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP said:

"Even core subjects are facing a teaching shortage. What's more these statistics look even worse in light of the Scottish Government's serious failures to meet its student teacher intake targets.

"There can now be no doubt the SNP are presiding over a teacher recruitment crisis."
