Responding to the news that the executive of the EIS teaching union have agreed to recommend a statutory strike ballot, Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Tavish Scott MSP said:

"This is a mess entirely of the Scottish Government's own making. They have been warned time and time again what will be necessary to avert industrial action but still they have allowed the situation to snowball.

"If these strikes go ahead they will be the first national teaching strikes in Scotland since the Thatcher years.

"It is time that the Education Secretary listened to teachers and put a fair deal in place, backed by McCrone 2 - an independent expert review of teachers' terms and the demands placed upon them."
