Commenting on a BBC investigation into the quality of teaching in Scotland's primary schools, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:
"We have assumed for a long time that pupils suffer a drop in attainment in the early years of secondary education.
"Reports of primary teachers overestimating their pupils' attainment merit serious investigation. It may be that the drop in attainment happens in the later years of primary schooling.
"These reports underline the absolute importance of excellent teacher training.
"So it is all the more worrying when we hear about the impact the Scottish Government's cuts on hundreds of teacher training places are beginning to have on institutions like Moray House and Jordanhill.
"Teachers' jobs are under threat.
"Teacher training capacity for the future is under threat.
"And the ability of our trainee teachers to get a proper grounding in key subjects such as science is also under threat as a result of cuts."
