Commenting on the Justice Secretary's announcement of an additional £5.5 million to help deliver swift implementation of community service orders, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"This additional funding is a direct result of the Liberal Democrats putting pressure on the Justice Secretary to improve resources for community justice.
"It will make a real difference in helping to clear the current back log of community service orders. But, this will only be the start of reforming Scotland's current sentencing system.
"Ministers must now focus on putting in place the resources needed to replace very short term sentences with tough and effective community sentences which are immediately available to judges.
"It is vital that people trust community service orders and that these are swift and tough, making offenders work to repay their communities."
